World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) Celebrated

Ministry of Communication and Information Technology celebrated WTISD 2016 in a ceremony under the theme of ICT Entrepreneurship for Social Impact. Mr. Mohammad Mohaqaq, Second Vice-Deputy Chief Executive, Mr. Baryalai Hassam, Acting ICT Minister, MCIT senior officials, Parliament Members, representatives of Telecom companies, foreign and local guests and a large number of mass media took part in this ceremony.

Congratulating the WTISD, Acting Minister said that ICT sector has a significant role and impact on social developments in the world in particular in our homeland Afghanistan. In 1898, Afghanistan had been connected with the world through line telephone for the first time, but ICT has had an important role for economic and social developments of the country over past 15 years. By improving communication infrastructure and promoting ICT service provisions, the sector has played a key role for catalyzing other sectors services for improvement which resulted strengthening of national economy.
In his turn, Mr. Mohaqaq spoke on problems, innovations, progresses and challenges over the history and said that during the last decade remarkable progresses have been made in Afghanistan in the ICT sector. He also spoke about the need for affordable of telecom services and enhancing better quality of services in particular the internet. He added that by investing the sector can create effective programs for further development of the sector which can generate jobs and increase employment opportunities as well as convince Afghan youth come back to the country”.

Then, messages from Ahmad Zia Massoud, President’s Special Representative for Good Governance and from ITU Secretary General were read out. Afterward, Gulalai Akbary, Parliament Member, representatives of AWCC and Afghan Telecom companies delivered speeches on the occasion.
