-MCIT/ATRA Issues 3G License to MTN

The 3rd generation mobile services (3G) license was issued to MTN Afghanistan Telecommnication Company in values of 25million USD. To sign the agreement,a press conference was held at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. The license was officially signed by Abdul Wakil Shergul chairman of Afghanistan Telecom Regulatory Authority (ATRA) and Hassan Jaber CEO of MTN Telecommunication Company.

The meeting was attended by H.E. Amirzai Sangin Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Dr Hazrat Omer
Zakhelwal Minister of Finance, Abdul Hadi Arghandiwal Minister of Economy, Deputy Ministers of Commerce and Justice , Hassan Jaber CEO of MTN, Officials of MCIT and representatives of domestic and foreign media.
It is worth mentioning that MTN is the 2nd telecommunication company which is issued with 3G license in Afghanistan. Etisalat was the first telecom company to sign the 3G license agreement with MCIT/ATRA. Other domestic GSM operators in Afghanistan are also interested to obtain 3G License in the near future.
H.E Amirzai Sangin Minister of Communications and IT described the importance of 3G services and said that after india, Afghanistan is the country in the region that could provide 3G Telecom Services to the public. H.E further added that the neighboring countries have not so far implemented the 3G technology. The Minister added that Implementing this advanced technology will enable 50% of our citizens to have access to internet services in two years. Talking about issuance of new technology licenses in terms of transparency, the Minister said that the licenses are issuing based on the presidential decree and within the provisions of the Telecom Services Regulation Law in joint collaboration with the Ministries of the MCIT, Finance, Commerce, Economy, and Justice of Afghanistan.
Afterwards, Dr Hazrat Omer Zakhelwal Minister of Finance thanked the leadership of the MCIT for the valuable steps taken towards expansion of Communication and IT services in the country, and considered the issuance of 3G services an important step in the deveplopment of the country. The session ended with responding the questions posed by journalists.
